| The Scottish Terrier
Club Fun Day was held last Saturday at Castle Hill Showground. Fergus,
Hamish, Meg & Fidget and their respective humans travelled to Sydney
to represent the Canberra Clan. Hamish turned one on the day, so it was
fitting for him to spend it with other Scotties. Apart from the
almost-fiasco of the Dunstones nearly turning up on the wrong day, most
things went quite smoothly. There were quite a large number of the bearded
beasts there, somewhere between 20 and 30. But the prizes seemed to
outnumber the dogs. Robyn, Jules and Geoff must have amazing powers of
persuasion to have managed so groaning a prize table. We had many lucky
door prizes as well!
Each arrival was made to feel welcome and by the time your entry was recorded, you were wearing a tag and enjoying a home-made biscuit and cuppa. This was a good time to meet others, before the serious side of the day began. Events began with the maze, ever popular and more of a challenge to some than others! Some practice runs were allowed, but by and large those who had done it before were much faster. Times ranged from 5.5sec to almost 2 minutes. Even the prospect of a tempting treat at the end did not work for some, who took their time and ambled both ways along it. Meg is feeling smug because all her times were better than Fidget's (or maybe she's just greedier!). You'd think all that hair might slow Spinner down, but no-one came near his time. Many of the dogs were faster than the owner running around the outside of the maze, though. Next was the bikkie and spoon race. Just substitute a bone-shaped dog biscuit for an egg and you get the idea. You lose if the dog eats the biscuit before the end! This event yielded some interesting results as some of the dogs and their handlers were mismatched in the speed department. Dunkin' dogs was a very popular event. Cocktail frankfurts were placed under water and the dogs had to retrieve them. Hard to believe that some of them obviously can't eat under water. Many a dog came up empty-jawed, but not Meg, who had grabbed the first Frankfurt even before the official start. The intrepid ones managed another event. Take 5 large soft-drink bottles, place them into a circle and throw a piece of Frankfurt into the space in the middle. Can the dogs work out how to get the food? What do you think? Lunch was delicious. Thanks to Jim and Peter who cooked all the sausages and onions for the humans, and to everyone who contributed to the spread and to Robyn who co-ordinated all the food as well as the stall and everything else. Lots of lovely things were to be had at the stall - mugs, pillows, jewellery, figurines, etc. There was also a table to display the "Beast in Bed" range of bed linen which features Scotties. It was wonderful to meet so many new people and to put names to faces for some others. I am pleased that the STC includes events for those who just love to hang-out with their Scots and other Scottie lovers. Thanks again to all those who put so much work into the day. We all appreciated it. Meg and Fidget were both so tired they did not even notice that we were near Grandma's until we were there! Eileen Dunstone |
